Intro into Loose Lead Walking

The main objective with this training is to reward for a loose lead, so they can be a bit in front, that’s ok.

They don't need to be right next to your heel in a regimented way.

Use the verbal cue “Stay Close” and then guide your dog around to the side of you and then give them the treat just by your knee.

Keep it interesting and change direction when you need to. If they pulls, change direction also to encourage a loose lead again.

  • Say “Stay close”

  • Do 2 steps then reward

  • Then 4 steps then reward

  • Then 6 steps then reward

Etc….

Over time they will start to learn that just walking alongside your leg is a great place to be.

But be patient

You can give them less and less rewards over time.

Practise this in low distraction environments first like the house and garden, then you can take to more difficult locations like the pavement outside.

Practise for 5-10 mins max at a time and then have a nice break.
