Door knocking and reward

  • We want to get your dog used to the sounds of knocking and other noises outside.

  • You can make quiet knocking noises inside the house on the inside doors and tables.

  • When your dog hears the knock, looks but doesn’t react then we can say “yes” and reward.

  • As they do well with each noise, increase the challenge each time by making the 'knocks' louder.

  • The most difficult noises for them are like the actual door knock and and so this is the ultimate thing to practise on.

  • If you are doing the ‘knocking’ training and they do react, go back a few steps to where they could manage it.

  • Make sure to practice the knocking exercise every day. 2 x 5 mins a day at least

  • The idea of this, is that their expectation of what the door knocking means, changes. Because they will have been rewarded for calm behavior on repeat, this calm reaction should become their new normal!

Ring Doorbell and Reward

  • We want to get your dog used to the sounds of Door bell.

  • You can play the Ring doorbell from You Tube inside the house just as we did. (If you have a traditional doorbell, you can record it on your whats app and then you can replay it quiety as many times as need)

  • When your dog hears the doorbell, looks but doesn’t react then we can say “yes” and reward.

  • As they do well with each repetition of the door bell, increase the challenge each time by making the volume incrementally louder.

  • Make sure to practice the knocking exercise every day. 2 x 5 mins a day at least.

  • The idea of this, is that their expectation of what the doorbell means, changes. Because they will have been rewarded for calm behavior on repeat, this calm reaction should become their new normal!
