300 Peck Method
300 Peck Method (Named because of a study on chickens)
Our main criteria for this is that the lead is loose! If the are slightly ahead that is ok, they don't need to be right next to you in an 'obedience' fashion
As long as the lead is not tight, that is all we are looking for.
Just as we did…
-
Using treats in a treat pouch so your hands are free and natural
-
Reward for 1 step with them right next to you,
-
Then reward for 2 steps with them right next to you
-
Then reward for 3 steps with them right next to you you
-
And so on...
-
If they pull on the 3rd step for example, go back to 2 steps where it's easier for them.
-
They will need some good repetition of these early steps.
-
See if you can build to 20 steps in the garden where they stays close.
-
Then add the lead/longline to see if the 20 steps is possible with that.
-
You can then practice this on the pavement. Just 5 mins in front of the house.
-
Build up the distances and locations over the days/weeks/months
-
Keep the sessions short.
-
If they have 2 outings a day make one of those a training walk for loose lead walking.
-
When to practice is key. Make sure they are in a calm enough state of mind to focus reliably. If not avoid the training.
-
We want them to be set up for success.
-
Good luck!
