“1, 2, 3”

The purpose of this exercise is to create distance if you need to get your dog away from a trigger. It will enable them to move with you rather than worrying and needing to pull them.

-
Say “1,2,3” over a few paces and pop a treat by your shoe after saying 3.
-
They should pick up the consistency of this and understand that there will be a guaranteed reward.
-
Repetition is super important so they build this into their muscle memory
-
Start to add more steps in between saying "1" & "2" and "2" & "3". Your dog will stick with you while they wait to hear you get to 3.
-
This way they will stick with you of their own accord, giving them predictability and choice and control.
-
This should be a nice confidence builder for them.
-
Practise this in the home and outdoors.
